How to Pay Income Tax that is due?

There are notices and remainders sent by the IT department for tax due confirming that the people are conscious about their tax liabilities and can evade penalties in future. One needs to follow the following steps to complete tax payments:

  • Open the official website of the Tax Dept. (TIN NSDL website).
  • Click on the e-payment option.
  • Click the option 'Challan 280' for paying taxes.
  • Fill in the absolute details in the form including PAN, assessment year, contact number, name, address, email id, etc.
  • Choose the type of tax applicable, i.e., advance tax or tax on regular assessment. Taxes due shall be paid under the option, 'tax on regular assessment'.
  • Determine the bank through which you want to make the payment and proceed to the online payment portal.
  • Save the receipt generated that might be used for later reference as a statement for the department.

If you plan to pay taxes offline, then you can do so by visiting the nominated banks. You can pay the amount due through cash or cheque. However, you will have to take the challan from the IT office and fill in the details and submit with the required amount.

The income tax department, however, offers an online payment option of unpaid tax at www.tin-nsdl.com. Thus, according to the convenience of the individual, he can make due tax payment either offline or online. Consequently, one should make sure to make timely payment in order to avoid penalties in future.
