Voter ID card

The Election Commission of India issues a voter card, also known as Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) to all the individuals eligible to vote. The basic purpose of this document is voter's identification and prevention of electoral frauds.

Documents required for voter ID card:

To apply for voter ID card one needs to submit following documents:

  • Identity proof (Aadhar, PAN, Passport, DL)
  • Address proof (Aadhar, DL, Passport)
  • Photograph

Voter ID card eligibility:

  • Age of at least 18 years is must for applying voter ID card
  • Some people belonging to a specified/ special category/ financially bankrupt are not eligible to apply for a voter card even if they attain the age of 18 years.

How to verify voter ID?

If any voter ID card holder has any kind of doubt with the genuineness of the card, he/ she can verify it anytime both online and offline. To do this offline, one can reach nearest Election Commission website and check the electoral roll if their name is present there or not.

This could be done online by logging on to the website of concerned Chief Electoral Officer of their state and providing the voter ID details. This may result in opening of the electoral roll, which may help the voter to know if his/ her name is present there or not.

Voter ID card correction in electoral roll

If there is any error committed in the printing/ preparation of voter ID card, it can be rectified by the card holder with the help of a form made by ECI. For instance, in case of wrong name written on card, you need to fill up the form 8 and highlight the corrections to be made in the voter ID.

This may follow submitting the form with required documents. ERO will then take required steps to ensure correction and the updated card will be sent to you.
