An International Driving Permit (IDP)/International Driving Licence (IDL) is a legal document that allows you to drive/rent a car in a country you visit. You have to apply for an International Driver’s Permit in your home country. This document is authorized by the United Nations. Here is what you have to do:

  • If you lose your IDL within India, then file an FIR immediately.
  • You should also write a letter to the RTO about the same and attach copy of the FIR.
  • If you lose the licence abroad, then you should notify the Indian Embassy and local authority about it.
  • The authorities may provide you with a duplicate document after a proper verification.

An IDP is allowed in USA if you have a tourist visa for up to 2 months. If you plan to stay in the country for 6 months, and drive a four-wheeler, then you have to take a driving test for a permanent licence.

The WIAA (Western Indian Automobile Association) issues IDL if you reside in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, or Pune. You have to be a member of this Association for issuance of IDP here. The application fee is Rs. 1,500 in this case. You will receive the licence within 2 days.

Your IDL can work as an identity proof in certain cases and subject to conditions in the said country, when you travel abroad.
